What Are God’s Consolations? Finding Comfort When Anxiety Is Great Within Us

The Hebrew word carries the idea of:

  • comfort
  • encouragement
  • reassurance
  • tender care
  • being soothed or comforted by another

In other words, God’s consolations are not merely things He gives.

They are ways He ministers to the anxious heart—the ways He reminds us that we are not alone.

Sometimes that reminder comes through a promise.

Sometimes through His presence.

Sometimes through truth that steadies the mind.

Sometimes through the assurance that He remains faithful even when our hearts are troubled.

The consolation is not always the removal of the anxiety.

Often it is the nearness of God in the middle of it.

What I love about the verse is that the psalmist doesn’t say:

“When anxiety was great within me, my circumstances improved.”

He says:

“Your consolations brought me joy.”

The anxiety was real.

The answer wasn’t denial.

The answer wasn’t pretending everything was fine.

The answer was that God met him in the middle of it.

His comfort, His presence, His truth, and His faithfulness became a source of joy even while the struggle remained.
